SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission for recruitment to posts in central government departments and ministries. It is open to Class 12 pass candidates — unlike SSC CGL which requires graduation.

Tier 1 (Computer Based Test)

Tier 2 (Descriptive Paper)

  • Essay Writing (200-250 words): 100 marks, 60 minutes
  • Letter/Application Writing (150-200 words): 100 marks, 60 minutes
  • Conducted offline (pen and paper)

Tier 3 (Skill/Typing Test)

  • Data Entry Operator: 8,000 key depressions per hour on computer
  • LDC/JSA/Postal/Sorting Assistant: Typing test at 35 wpm in English or 30 wpm in Hindi

45-Day Study Plan

Week 1: Maths Foundation Number System, Percentage, Average, Ratio — 90 minutes daily. CHSL Maths is much easier than CGL; this week covers most of it.

Week 2: Reasoning Foundation Series (number and letter), Analogies, Odd One Out, Directions, Coding-Decoding — 90 minutes daily.

Week 3: English + GK English: Grammar rules (2 hours daily focusing on error detection and fill in the blanks) GK: History and Geography static topics (90 minutes)

Week 4: Practice Daily: 25 Quant + 25 Reasoning questions (mixed) Daily: 1-hour English practice GK: Polity and Economy basics

Week 5: Current Affairs + Advanced Practice Cover last 3 months of current affairs (30 min/day) Full mock test once this week

Week 6: Full Mocks + Tier 2 Prep Two full Tier 1 mocks Tier 2: Practice writing one essay and one letter daily

Descriptive Paper (Tier 2) Strategy

Essay topics frequently asked:

  • Education reforms, Technology impact, Environmental issues, Social issues (child labour, gender equality), India's economic development

Essay structure:

  1. Introduction: Define the topic, state your angle
  2. Body paragraph 1: First point with example
  3. Body paragraph 2: Second point with data/fact
  4. Body paragraph 3: Counter-argument and rebuttal
  5. Conclusion: Summarise, give way forward

Letter types: Formal letter (to editor, to authority), Informal letter (to friend, family). Practice 3–4 of each format.
