IBPS PO Interview Preparation 2026 — Questions, Tips & Document Checklist
The IBPS PO interview is the final hurdle after clearing Prelims and Mains. It carries 100 marks and is crucial for candidates close to the cut-off. Most candidates prepare extensively for the written exam but under-prepare for the interview. This guide fixes that.
Interview Format
- Duration: 15–20 minutes
- Panel: 4–5 members (usually a senior banker, HR representative, economist or finance expert)
- Marks: 100 (20% weightage in final merit — significant for close-call candidates)
- Languages: English or Hindi (your choice, state at the start)
- Mode: In-person at the specified interview centre
Types of Questions
1. Personal Introduction (Always First)
"Tell me about yourself" is always the opener. Prepare a 2-minute structured answer:
- Name and educational background
- Where you're from
- Why banking (specific reason, not generic)
- What makes you suitable
Wrong answer: "My name is Rahul, I did B.Com from Lucknow University and I want to join banking to serve the nation and grow professionally."
Right answer: Mention a specific incident or reason, your relevant skills, and a concrete goal within banking.
2. Banking Awareness Questions
These are the most important — prepare these thoroughly:
Frequently asked:
- What is the REPO rate currently? (Check RBI website before interview)
- What is CRR, SLR, MSF?
- What are the types of bank accounts? (Savings, Current, Fixed Deposit, Recurring, NRI accounts)
- What is NPA (Non-Performing Asset)?
- What is the difference between nationalised banks and private banks?
- Who is the current Governor of RBI?
- Name the scheduled commercial banks in India
- What is PMJDY (Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana)?
- What is UPI and who regulates it?
- What is the Basel III framework?
How to prepare: Read the RBI Annual Report summary, IBPS banking awareness PDFs, and check RBI's website for current rates.
3. Current Affairs Questions
- Recent major economic events (budget, GDP data, inflation)
- Government schemes launched recently
- India's position in major indices (Ease of Doing Business, Global Innovation Index)
- Recent RBI actions and policy changes
4. Questions on Your Academic Background
If you're from an engineering background: "Why banking and not software/core engineering?" If you're from Commerce/MBA: "You studied finance — how does that prepare you for IBPS PO?"
Prepare honest, specific answers. Panels can detect rehearsed generic answers. Relate your background to banking skills (data analysis, customer service, communication, finance management).
5. Situational Questions
- "How would you handle an irate customer at the branch?"
- "What would you do if you noticed a colleague accepting a bribe?"
- "How would you promote banking services in a rural area?"
For these, think STAR: Situation → Task → Action → Result. Stay ethical, practical, and customer-focused.
6. Questions on Your City/State
Interviewers often ask about your home state's economy, major industries, or recent news. Prepare 5–6 facts about your city and state, particularly related to banking penetration, agriculture, and economic contribution.
Common Mistakes
- Not knowing current RBI rates — check the day before the interview
- Generic "I want to serve the nation" answers — too vague, unimpressive
- Formal attire errors — wear formal, sober colours (navy, grey, black). No jeans. No casual shirts.
- Not preparing for "Why IBPS PO specifically" — know what the PO role involves day-to-day
- Nervous body language — maintain eye contact, don't fidget, sit upright
